Lecture Program

A window on a vanished
Edwardian way of life

Lecture and slide presentation by Leighton H. Coleman III
Editor of Polar, The Titanic Bear

The Incredible true story of a toy bear that survived the Titanic disaster
For grades 3 through 5

$250 Suffolk County/ $300 Elsewhere

The companion slide lecture program on Polar, The Titanic Bear, features what it was like for a child to grow up over eighty years ago, during the Edwardian age. Learn how yesterday's kids amused themselves in a world with out radios, televisions, computer games and plastic toys.

Douglas Spedden, seen in the movie spinning his top on deck of the Titanic, recalls a simpler era where, children played with beautiful handcrafted dolls, plush mohair teddy bears, lead soldiers and brightly printed board games.

This lecture harks back to heyday of "Grand Travel," when getting some where was extremely fun. Experience the twilight of the golden age of the ocean liner and transcontinental train service.

Witness the birth of many Edwardian innovations, such as the airplane, motor car and telephone, which were erroneously thought to presage a utopian society. Examine the Titanic disaster, the worlds first major industrial catastrophe and understand how it destroyed the Edwardians' idealistic view of technology.

The lecture has 120 slides and it can run from forty minutes to an hour long, depending on your schedule.
